White Meadow Lake Fire and Rescue
Squad
The Rockaway Township Fire Department consists of five fire and
rescue companies with equipment and personnel to combat medical
emergencies and disasters of any size or type. The Fire Department
consists of volunteers and it's companies are located at Hibernia,
Mt. Hope, Marcella, Birchwood and White Meadow Lake.
The White Meadow Lake Fire Department is located on Pawnee Avenue
in the Lake's business district and has it's own fire, rescue and
ambulance equipment. It is supplemented by the Township equipment
as required and by Mobil Intensive Care Units from Northwest Covenant
Hospital, and Morristown Memorial Hospital.
The Fire Department also maintains a Fire Prevention Bureau consisting
of a Fire Marshall and a team of Fire Inspectors. It receives donations
of surgical equipment such as crutches and makes them available
to members of the community.
Rockaway Township Library
The Rockaway Township Public Library began as two library stations,
one at the Marcella Community Club in 1954, and a second at the White
Meadow Lake Clubhouse. The library at White Meadow Lake Clubhouse
became a branch of the Rockaway Township Public Library in September,
1968.
In May 1981, the new Rockaway Township Public Library opened its doors
at 61 Mount Hope Road. Hours of the library are Monday-Friday 9-9,
Saturday 9-5.
Anyone five years and older may apply for a Rockaway Township Library
card that entitles the holder to borrow materials directly from the
library and the Hibernia branch. Through reciprocal agreements, a
card holder may also borrow from thirty-four community libraries in
Morris County, the Morris County Free Library and the County College
of Morris. In addition, interlibrary loans are available from New
Jersey State Library, the Newark Public Library, Rutgers University
Libraries, Princeton University Library and from out-of-state libraries.
There are programs within the library that are available to people
of all ages. The children's department is particularly active, with
numerous programs for children from preschool through school age.
The librarians are most helpful and have pamphlets available upon
request describing programs, facilities and equipment for public use.
Police Department
The Township of Rockaway is one of the fastest growing communities
in Morris County. Considering its vast size of approximately forty-three
square miles and its varied economic base of mining, farming, trucking,
recreation, corporate office activity and a large shopping mall, the
Township police must be able to address problems involving nonresidents
as well as residents of many economic and cultural backgrounds. Approximately
fifty percent of the police officers are college educated and the
department attempts to equip itself with the latest physical and psychological
techniques and equipment available.
The Police Department has appropriate personnel for assistance in
crime prevention, youth and family disturbances, detective investigation
and even boy scout exploring. Speakers are available for group education.
Health Department
The Health Department in Rockaway Township has a year-round
calendar of services offered to its residents. Among these services
are Blood Pressure screening, child health conferences, SMAC blood
screening, female cancer screening, male cancer screening, adult eye
screening and pre-school dental screening.
The Township also sponsors free rabies shots for Township owned pets.
Rabies vaccination and licensing are required for both dogs and cats.
All of the above services are announced well enough in advance for
Township residents to avail themselves of the services offered. For
information, appointments and clinic locations contact the Health
Department at 627-7200, ext. 348/349.
The Health Department will supply free information about nutrition,
accident prevention, smoking prevention, physical fitness, alcohol
abuse and drug abuse prevention and control at the same telephone
number.
Municipal Recycling Program
In 1988 the Rockaway Township Department of Health and Welfare
started a Municipal Recycling Program at curbside. A brochure is available
for all residents of the Township stating the curbside collection
schedule. The brochure carefully guidelines what, when, where and
how to prepare for pickup of the recyclables. The monthly clean-up
program is also mentioned in the Township's recycling brochure.
Questions should be directed to the Health Department, 627-7200, ext.
348/349.
